New Years in Naples

New Year's Eve in Naples began with a walk in a symphony of noise, food and joyful controlled chaos. We went into the heart of Naples, Via Toledo, and into the Spanish Quarters where there were fish sellers and veggies sellers and people selling Tombola Napoletana (Neapolitan Bingo). Vespa Scooters edged in between the crowd of people saying hello, pulling reluctant children to buy something for the Capodanno dinner and sellers shouting to each other across the crowd.

The lady selling Tombola is my favorite. This is how I feel after flying, by the way:

My favorite part of this walk was marveling at the Neapolitan street food. This, naturally, is something I could have only done while munching on one such delicacy: deep fried pasta ball.

Stuffed Pizzas: dive in! I would love to be baked in one and eat my way out.

New Years Eve at night is like taking a trip into the heart of a firework. Being in a firework you feel the booms the colors and the earth shaking around you for hours. It is a beautiful and dangerous experience if you are standing in the wrong place. You see, Neapolitan's enjoy fireworks more than any other city in Italy. They love fireworks so much that they set off the fireworks from their homes, the roads, balconies and roofs of their houses. Is it safe? No. Is it nice? It is incredibly thrilling and terrifying. To kick things off, most Italians (including Neapolitans) begin New Years Eve with a giant meal called Cenone di Capodanno or Giant Dinner of New Year's Eve.  I doubt most bellies had digested Christmas Cenone and Chrismas Eve Cenone but there they go, eating more incredibly delicious food in huge quantities. Luckily for us, we escaped a table setting and attended a friends party where she served a good 7-8 courses buffet style.

We left for her house early to avoid having fireworks dropped on our heads from balconies and arrived around 7 PM. I noticed the street cats on the way to the party. They had all quietly and sullenly congregated underneath of bridges and under bridges. They looked incredibly annoyed since a few people had already tested their fireworks and scared them with the booming noise.

Most Italians love talking about food, and astrology. They love talking about other things but food is the main topic (we can blog about this later) and astrology has everything to do with peoples personality (or lack thereof). One of the things we started the night with was a story-time style reading of everyone's sign for the night. It is of no surprise that Gemini eagerly begged to go first and the Leo's could care less knowing that they are going to be fine anyway.

We all wore silly little hats and talked about dating styles in the US vs. Italy. Italy is much more elusive as to who to date and how to date. Many things are inferred apparently which would drive me nuts. But once you are in a relationship people are jealous. Jealousy in Italy is supposed to be a sign of affection. I don't get it.

As midnight started to approach we climbed a narrow staircase leading up the the rooftop of the building. The countdown to 2017 started and I was overcome with joy to kick 2016 away!

As soon as the clock ticked to 2017 the earth began to burst, colors and trembles and rumbling and smoke filled the air and I didn't know what was happening! Children appeared at windows shooting firey arrows across at us! Women poured buckets of water from their balconies and people threw bombs, yes BOMBS into the air and ran. It was like being in a sublime dream with the dark of the night and shots of fireworks wizzing through the air, past my face and exploding feet away from me. I tend to laugh hysterically if scared so please ignore my insane laughter. You have to click on my blog to see the video and it is totally worth it.

Fireworks everywhere you can see!

And a video with some bomb-like fireworks.

Luckily for everyone (especially the pets) the fireworks ended around 4 AM. Dawn arose on 2017 looking splendid and full of joy.
