Oscars and Ignorance

Generally speaking, I don't tend to watch the Oscars because it violates my bedtime.

As a Leo, I revere sleep and any infringement on that will make for a grouchy person the next day. Nevertheless, also as a Leo, I admire extravagant dresses and would weekly wear my wedding dress if it were ok with the Chef. Therefore, last night I started to watch the Oscars to keep an eye out for some gorgeous gowns.

What shocked me from the Oscars last night wasn't the beautiful dresses. My joy looking forward to the crystal embellished puffy gowns turned to horror and a twisted stomach as I saw how ignorantly they addressed the lack of black actors in the Oscars, which in reality should have been an issue that no other cultures of color were included. Oh my gosh. The world is made up of a beautiful array of cultures of color! Look at a map of the world and you can just imagine how vivid and amazing some of the cultures and countries are with a simple glance.

The issue with last nights show is that they had a  golden opportunity for the highly watched and respected awards program to address lack of, not just black, but cultural inclusion in film.

I am absolutely no social or diversity expert but even I could tell there were issues with last night's program that could negatively impact society. People who don't know how to talk about cultural diversity, and could learn, will imitate the stupid way the Oscars angled the discussion.

The main problem with the way the Oscars addressed not including other cultures or races is that it was presented with a series of ignorant jokes. The black comedians who participated in these jokes were, with or without their knowledge, the voice for people left out. And they totally screwed it. There is no way that making fun of people gains positive attention to a racial problem. Chris Rock, famous black comedian, is not a diversity trained expert. Rather, he is a comedian who often makes racial jokes.

However, given such a huge television audience the Academy should have consulted inclusion experts on how to address the audience! Aren't these professional film producers, directors and actors experts in targeting audiences to get them to the Academy awards in the first place? I am horrified, jaw dropped horrified, with the way they handled it by making jokes about black actors complaining of not being in the awards. This minimized the potential of good the Academy could have done.

Had the topic been something currently trendy to protect such as global warming, animal abuse or gay issues I guarantee they wouldn't have allowed a comedian to make fun of it. Can you imagine if instead of making fun of angry black actors they had made a parody of Caitlyn Jenner or a dying baby dolphin? How dare they offend the trends!

Think of a dying baby dolphin..............

Think of making fun of the transgender......

There would be a moment of tense silence followed by choking sounds and then huge outcry from the actors and many would have famously walked out. However, what is more precious than human life? We still live in a world with racism in most countries. Look at the map of the world and pick a country. There have been race issues there and people dying for it too.

Think of a dying Indigenous child..............

This happens every day.

Death is inevitable to each of us but death due to our skin tone has been and continues to be a global problem. Believe it or not, in Italy there are huge racial tensions between the north and south. In Sweden they measured heads and distance between eyes to genetically select perfect humans and sterilize the rest. This idea of measuring humans to determine their natural born worth is called Antropometry. In Sweden they perfected their racial selection to an art that the Nazi's copied.

In Rowanda there was a genocide for what boiled down to the measurements of a nose.

In Mexico if you look Indigenous it will be impossible to move up the corporate ladder and skin whitening creams are bought weekly in your basket with your milk and eggs to keep your chances good.
"Instantly whiten your skin."

Races are good and beautiful. God knew what he was doing when He painted us with his brushes and palate. If we were all the same then children would be born with serious genetic mutations with crossed eyes and 15 fingers looking like curly french-fries. It is a great thing that there are people so genetically and culturally different from each other. This creates variety in cultural music, art, ways of learning, taking care of the elderly etc etc and there are so many things we can admire and learn from each other. Think of all the silly diets that change on the front pages of magazines in the grocery store each day, even most of those are culturally inspired: the Mediterranean diet, the Japanese diet, the Swedish diet.

So that is that. Last night's Oscars just goes to confirm that there is still a long way to go for people to learn to enjoy each other's culture. Even Chris Rock, who isn't qualified, could have made a more elegant monologue rather than an entitled one. His message basically said that black people shouldn't be angry. Well, I guess he got a nice paycheck for it.
