Frozen Outing

On Saturday the sun was shining, a few birds were coldly chirping and the weather channel was warning everyone of a new storm that would cover us in a foot of snow. We looked at each other and decided to go for a day in the country and enjoy the sunshine, even in 22 degrees F.

We dressed in layers.
Wisconsin flannel shirt meets Italian Missoni sweater

Wrapped soft wool scarves around our faces, and set out.

Off we went to Duke Farms, one of our favorite places in the summer, but just as nice in the winter. The drive there was scenic.
The school bus stop

Once there, we set out to walk since there were no bikes to ride. The snow was removed from the paths but on the grass it still went up to our knees.

We shivered our way around the farm, over the bridge to look at the lake.
The melting snow is leaving some natural sculptures.

the cold is a bummer

But where was the lake?

There it is!

Is it a meadow or a lake?

Oh, it was frozen solid! So the man I was with turned into a boy looking for sticks, stones and boulders to throw into the frozen lake to try to break it. "Can I got jump on it?" he seriously asked.

"Well", I told him, "if you do and go in I doubt you will ever eat pizza again." He thought about that and weighed his options "Break the lake or eat pizza."

Frozen in the lake

Pizza always wins.

In our case, I made a sort-of quiche. We were too far from a "real" pizzeria.

On the kitten front: they are getting fat, loud and old. El Gordo has been busy vacuuming the food with industrious precision while Bentley is left with his one tooth trying to carefully get a few morsels. We decided to feed Bentley separately and Fatty howls outside of the room like a gurgling maniac.
"El Gordo eats my food!"

Thank goodness it is March.
