Happy Beautiful Mother's Day: Mary
Giving birth in a dirty barn isn't the way one would think the Savior of the world would be born... I can't imagine a smelly hay and poop filled stable with un-vaccinated barn animals being a desirable place to be for any amount of time, let alone a place to give birth, without medical help, alone and have no place to lay the new fresh little head of the baby but in a troth where animals normally snort their food down. If I think of the way Fatty and Bently hog their food, there is no way I would put a baby in those bowls! And those bowls get washed with detergent! The ranky smell of an old barn, dating before modern hygene and the surrounding of misery and poverty, loneliness and physical weakness through childbirth is how Mary gave birth. Yes it all seems so picturesque in the Nativity scene we make for Christmas. The way Mary gives birth says so much about how she would be a Mother to us all.
I feel like growing up Mary seemed so inaccessible when I would see her image in statues, paintings, and occasionally on necklaces. She seemed just like a figure and I didn't really understand why or want to understand why she was there. Why put so much emphasis on Mary? Well, she is our friend, she is accessible to all, and she is super sweet, super humble and loving and attentive like no other mom on this planet has ever been. Mother's in distress of their kids should call to Mary. Mother's who've lost children. Mother's who can't stand their kids. Mother's who never saw their babies be born alive. Mary isn't just a mom to all of us. She is a mother to mothers.
She is a mother to us when we all need Mom. She'll never say "I told you so." Or make you feel guilty, or listen but not listen, or be silent and cold. No, Mary will treat each of us like her very special child that she wants to be with and comfort and give joy to.
Just like mom, it's best to talk (pray) to Mary frequently and not just when you need something. Our Lady of Fatima (Mary appearing in Portugal) told the children how much power the rosary has. Praying the rosary and talking to Mary through it is like giving mom roses.
Roses that will never go away. So happy Mother's Day, Mary! And Happy Day of Our Lady of Fatima.
The birth of Jesus is the third bead in the Joyful Mysteries.
She is the mother of the lonely and gives them comfort and company when they call on her, any time of day! 24/7 Mary is on call to listen to her kids when they are alone as she was alone giving birth.
She is the mother of the rejected as she was rejected from any shelter. A pregnant woman rejected and pushed to give birth in a dirty barn! That just sounds so abusive...when there was shelter she could have been given and prioritized given her condition. She is the mom of us when we feel rejected by all and pushed to the cowstall!
She is the mother to the poor as she gave birth in pure poverty. She didn't have anyone giving her sips of ice-water, a soothing water-birth or flowers....she gave birth as only the very poor have given: with animals and dung heaps. She understands poverty and it's pain.
She is the mother of hope. Mary gives us hope when we turn to her as her moment of giving birth to tiny Baby Jesus gave humanity an only hope to be as God wanted us to be before sin: pure and loving. He is our Hope and arrived through Mary.
She is the mother of sorrow and joy. Her delivery in the manger yes brought the world a Savior but this was also her Son who she would see rejected, ignored by humanity, humiliated and murdered. She glorified God despite her sorrow and through God shows us how to have a part of our Hearts in joy for Him.
She is the mother of the humble. Mary's virtues of humility show us all how to live not for ourselves but for Christ in true humility setting ourselves and our pride aside to live in love and strive to live like Christ did.

Salve Regina, Mater Misericordiae,
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra salve.
Ad te clamamus exules filli Hevae,
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsillim ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
