Gatita Vega (1993-2017)

It is with a heavy heart that we share the death of a soft and loyal little feline soul. In her 24 years she was there to see us grow from children to teens to adults. She saw adults grow into older adults, and my grandparents go from vibrant 70 year olds to determined 90 year olds. She watched our first steps, my grandpa's last steps, she was there for births and weddings. Gatita, we were lucky to share our  family with you!

Gatita Vega was born 24 years ago in 1993 to an alley cat mother. She was a tiny tough little kitten. At a young age she fought large street cats and escaped many dangerous brawls. One beautiful day the little white kitten was walking under a bougamvillia tree and saw Misifous, my grandparents 20 year-old cat.

Misifous looked on the skinny tough kitten and said, "Listen my little dear, there is a kind old lady and a grumpy old man who live in this house and love cats! They raise cats to a ripe old age. Come, little one, come take care of their courtyard and they will take care of you!" The kitten was apprehensive. She didn't trust anyone so at first she sat in the corner of the court yard. An old man came out every morning to water his roses, he never noticed her. She sat under a large flower. In the evening he would return, cursing Misifous for eating so much and would feed him. Misifous would leave a few generous bites of meat for Gatita. Finally she had the courage to eat when the old man came. He took one look at her, threw his hands in the air and stomped off in pretend anger, truly happy that a young cat showed up to take care of his garden!

One day Misifous decided that 22 years were long enough. He wrapped his tail around him, tucked his nose into his tail and passed on to the land of catnip and cat naps leaving his apprentice behind.

La Gatita never softened her tough spirit, but she was incredibly loyal and had alot to say about life. In her old age she too took the same seat as Misifous, she sat in aches and pains watching a little fighting kitten limp by and said, "Listen my son, if you come to care for this garden the old lady will feed you well and you will grow old." Bonito climbed over the tall garden wall and into the courtyard. Each day he respectfully let the Gatita eat and would only approach the food when she was satisfied and licking her whiskers.

Gatita leaves her best friend and kitchen buddy, my mom, with a heavy heart, she leaves a sighing sad Grandma , many living children, siblings and beautiful rose bushes she loved and a bugambillia tree. She leaves a Vega cat legacy of strong willed, long lived cats who stepped into the home of my grandparents as lost kittens and stayed till they were aging and just as a part of the house as the lavic rock it's built on.

Gatita taught us of self-preservation as she looked out for herself.

She taught us that we all need to talk sometimes even if it sounds like a "meow".

She taught us that it is incredibly important to forget everything on a sunny day to lay under the rose bush and take a nap.

She taught us that when we grow old it is important to find a lost runt and point them in the right direction of life. Gatita taught us respect: to put our elders first, to keep our appearance up for our own dignity and to always rub the ankle of someone who deserves it.

Her shadow sitting in the kitchen doorway will be missed. We miss you already, Gatita, may you be enjoying rose bushes in the happy kitty Catnip-land. Thank you for watching us all grow.

Thank you for purring at our bachelorette parties and ignoring our shenanigans.

Thank you for watching us grow from children, to adults that still had an inner kid.

Thanks for watching us get ready for our weddings, and being the only calm one:

Thank you little one for being a constant presence in our growing changing lives, love the Vega family.
