Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia is a special little town. It is only about an hour's drive from DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia but it is in a different world.

Country road, take me home, to the place I belong! West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country road.

In Harper's Ferry time has stood still.

It sits at the cross roads of two peaceful rivers, the Shenandoah coming from Pennsylvania and the Potomac winding towards the great ocean. Right as the rivers meet there is a little town carved like if Norman Rockwell painted it on the side of a mountain. There you need good  thighs to climb up and down the steep hills. In Harpers Ferry the houses are made from stone, most little homes have tin roofs, a black stove to warm up the home and a cat to roam around.

St. Peters Catholic Church built for the Catholic Irishmen who built the railroads.

Cats will be cats just about anywhere.

Harper's Ferry  has veils of trees that change moods with each season. My favorite time to go is in the fall when everything is orange and the leaves gently fall to the ground.

I've always been drawn to this town to come for peace and look over the hills. I love the fact that Jesus went to mountains to pray so there must be something to imitate in that. One of my favorite Psalms is 121 "I will life my eyes to the hills from where comes my help. My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth." Mountains are powerful to help you feel still and listen for guidance from above.

It is as if being in the mountains your body lives with other living things: the trees, soaring relaxed birds, the grass and deer and you see that you're all in this life together not so apart after all. The problems of life seems easier to talk about in the company of squirrels and trees. No one listening but them. The thing I enjoy most is that trees and mountains have the same peaceful feeling all over the world.

The one thing that is different from other mountains at Harpers Ferry is that they also have kettle pop corn, smoked BBQ and fresh apple pie.

It is the south after all! And if you feel fat after eating then sander over the the Appalachian trail and walk off a few calories!

On the home front the kitties have been doing what they do best:
Waiting for food
I took them to get their annual shots and they were so well behaved that I took them to the horse stables to meet some other mammals. Fatty despised it. He thinks the smell of a barn is awful. Bentley begged to stay. When we got home they sniffed and stared at each other not sure of what happened. Then forgot all about it and fell asleep standing up staring at each other, as cats will do.
