2016 in Literary Review

2016 was concerning in terms of literary accomplishment for me. "Concerning" being a very soft word. I'm still waiting for 2012 to get better and for 2014 to help me loose weight but for some reason years are unchangeable unless you pretend you never knew that year, which sometimes works.  I wouldn't erase 2016 but would pick highlights of the year: mostly being horses, mama, grandma, food and bees.

Bentley is still waiting to find out what fate Dr. Palmer will have for killing a lion in 2015.

I would eliminate 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005 and make 2008 and 2010 five years longer. Both being very good hair years.  It isn't exactly the theory of relativity but you can change a year if you pretend it didn't exist...the wrinkles it caused and the extra flying white stray hairs are thankfully voiceless. However, if white hairs could speak, oh what would they say? "GET ME A VODKA!!!!" or something alike. I don't like vodka, but perhaps my white hairs do. They have their own minds and most are mean old men.

So, 2016, what did we read? What didn't we read? We read many dozens of children's books! We read in funny voices to the 2nd graders. They slapped and clapped their hands with delight. They roared with laughter and pushed each other to see pictures of the story. "Outta my way!" shoving and breathing angrily to see Cinderella get the magic slipper.

In 2016 we read parts of books. We didn't finish books because we decided that life is too short to finish boring, ignorant, or uninteresting books. We were ok with breaking up with books. This is something I have never done before. It was my internal law to never break up with a book no matter how bad. But some books are worth breaking up with. It might even be worth writing the author (unless they are dead) and letting them know

"Dear Agatha,
I couldn't stand the murder plot in 'The Moving Finger' because it was identical to 'The Sore Thumb' so I set it aside."

In 2016 we only read 1 book in Italian. We should have read more. Well, I still have 21 days or so to delve into a book in Italian.

In 2016 we gleaned so much quality material to write a story. The main characters would be horses, cats, children and the voice in my head as I edit my resume. The voice in my head would be narrated by Julie Andrews / Mary Poppins. "With every job you apply for you snap your fingers and WOOSH it becomes a game! Just a spoonful of sugar helps your interview outfit not fit! Your interview outfit not fi-it, interview outfit not fit in the most delightful way!"

In 2017 I hope to read more consistently and...actually learn something. I also want to consistently write more. We'll see what happens. Hopefully 2017 will be a year I will want to stretch 2 years longer.
